We Remember Always

Indigo Night
So cold is the night air,
the snow crunches loudly under my boots;
the sidewalk ice moans
in proxy for the protests in my mind,
and the growing dread in my bones.
It’s rarely a good sign
when the phone rings at 2:00.
Four blocks seems so far,
yet, not far enough
to avoid your last ambulance ride.
The silence throbs with shock waves,
the world moves in slow motion,
when you are gone.
Under a velvet blanket
of indigo sky, I pray
fervent foxhole prayers,
interceding to the whitened light
of a million crystallite stars -
it appears heaven’s nightlight
was left on for you,
that already, celebrating
angels are welcoming you.
From love you came,
to pure Love you must return;
but, for me, I’ve never seen
an indigo night so blue.

If I'd Known Then What I Know Now

I would count each hair on your head,

And memorize each nuance of light,

Dancing on each gossamer strand.

I would store your fresh baby smell in a

Bottle for days of drought without you,

When my memory grows dim;

Future faith blinded my present with you.

If I’d known then what I know now,

Nothing could distract me from watching you

Nestle safe in my arms close to my heart,

Sweet visions skipping on your eyelids,

Sparkly diamonds in morning dew and

Pixie dust reserved just for you.

Order the mundane be silent --

No desire for caution this last day!

If I’d known then what I know now,

I would beg God for just a little more time,

For one last kiss on your velvety cheek,

One more lingering look,

One more breathtaking smile before you go,

Long enough for my solemn promise:

This is not good-bye, my love, it is,

“See you later, my little Sweetpea.”

Just Some Cute Little Pix of a Cute Little Boy

Congrats, Grammy Tami

Grammy Tami just gave us word that she found out last night she won a major poetry contest. She submitted one of her poems, The Sorority No One Wishes To Join, to the Inspirit Poetry Contest. She found out yesterday that her poem--written about Dave's sister when her daughter died during this time last year--was the winner of a $500 grand prize and will be published!

Congrats, Grammy Tami! We're proud of your accomplishment!

Here's the poem:

The Sorority No One Wishes To Join
They arrived one at a time,
bearing a casserole dish
or cake in their hands;
these women who have lost a child
came to console a new member.
The dormant debt of compassion
from their own past needed
fulfillment; and so,
with tear-stained cheeks,
those dignified,
Christic women enfolded
her in their arms – knowing –
all that could be done was
to come and to hold and to weep,
to shed their tears together
in compassionate relief.

When she’s ready, she too
will make initiation calls,
holding cake or casserole at
the door in her outstretched hands,
discovering the aching pain
for her child assuaged when she
graces another’s world of grief
with the inherent hope
her presence may bring;
then her pain will subside.
Giving freely what was freely
given, she pays her dues.
Once given the consolation
of shared grief, these survivors
go as God’s hands and feet.

PS - This coming Thursday, December 14, is a very bittersweet anniversary for us. It is the year-to-date of the beginning of Maya's eternal life with her Lord. For us, it is a solemn reminder that we miss her very much. So, we will be both celebrating her new life and mourning her young life here on Earth that day. We'll have a special post just for her that day. Promise.

Some of My Rowdy Friends Came Over Last Night

Owen peers out from around his mama.
Owen's Daddy and Camden hang out after dinner.
Owen's Daddy (Lynn), Camden, Owen, Owen's Mommy (Jen)
Lynn's cell phone is delicious!
Camden chills on Mommy Cara's lap.
Jack was so talkative last night. Here, he tells O's Mommy all about his week.
Jack and Cam reach out and touch each other's hands.
Hey, buddy! Someday we'll probably be in the same grade at Stolley!
O Dawg was active all night. He was crawling around and rolling and getting all the toys out. It was interesting watching how active he is at his age!
This evening's play time is brought to you by the Letter D.

Lynn, Owen, the delicious cell phone, and Dexy.
Lynn must have dropped his phone in a pot of honey or somethin'.
Camden likes cameras. Here, he and Mommy ham it up for Unca Dave.
Owen, Lynn, Jack and Jen. (That rhymed a little.)
Camden is the more reserved of the three. While Jack was blabbing to Jen and Lynn, and Owen was crawling all about the house, Cam just took it all in. Once he warmed up to everyone though, he was quite talkative.

Camden Moses.
Owen and Dexy on the prowl.
Owen meets his long lost friend Jack.
Owen and Camden roll around.
The two J's-- Jen and Jack--hang out.
Last night, we had a kinda last-minute planned meeting of some of the members of the Heartbreakers. Lynn, Jen, Owen, Aaron, Cara and Camden came over to eat some Potato Bacon Chowder and have some play time. Everyone had a great time. Owen even brought some gifts for Cam and Jack. Very generous, O Dawg!
Owen was as active a baby as we've seen lately. He was crawling all over.
Jack was the talker of the evening. He started talking early in the evening and really didn't stop the whole time.
And Cam was the supervisor. He was a bit more mellow than the other two.
It was interesting to see their personalities when we got them all together.
We'll see you again soon, bros! You too, Sean, Ryan and Dax! (Some of the boys are heading to Lincoln soon with their Mommies to see Dax and his Mommy and Daddy. That'll be fun.)

The Popeye Smile

I'm Jack-Jack the little man.
I yam what I yam what I yam.
I'm strong, fit and so lean,
Cause I eat my green beans.
I'm Jack-Jack the little man.
Toot toot!

A Good Old-Fashioned Johnny Jump Up

Mary Ingram got this for Amy's shower in May. It sat in Jack's closet until last night when we were searching for a way to entertain him. It worked--to say the least! He had a blast, and we had a blast watching him have a blast!
Spinning, spinning, spinning. Bouncing, bouncing, bouncing...
Chewing, chewing, chewing...
Okay, too much spinning, not enough bouncing. Gotta get my bearings back.
(Look at those chicken legs!)
Nope, I'm dizzier than I thought!
By the way, do you see the laminate flooring behind Jack? Dave accomplished that after almost 75 separate mental breakdowns! It's pretty, but I think we can safely say 'never again'!

Not Our Usual Christmas

We're changing the way we do business here at our house this Christmas.
For the past four years since we met each other, we have gone out and spent extravagantly on gifts for each other. We go to the malls and department stores and search high and low for the perfect gift for the other person and for many others. I can never find the right gift for Amy, mainly because we have everything we need, and if we don't have it, we get it when we need it.
There are many families in our town who don't have that luxury, and the number is growing exponentially. According to the Heartland United Way, the need for locals to step up and help the less privileged is now higher than ever. They are in charge of three holiday programs: Toys for Tots, The Giving Tree and Adopt A Family. When I talked to the projects coordinator on Wednesday, she said the number of families referred to them by their internal agencies for Adopt A Family for Christmas has nearly doubled--from 38 last year to 71 this year.
So, as you can imagine, they're having a hard time finding enough people to buy gifts for children who need them.
The other day, I talked to my co-workers about foregoing the usual Secret Santa shopfest and contributing all our money to Adopt A Family. Most of them agreed that was the way to go; the ones who didn't agree were coerced by yours truly.
We got our family yesterday and we're shopping for them on Monday. Here's the list of what they need:
Single parent family having tough financial times:
Mom No gift requested
Son (13) 12 Husky jeans, coat
Son (10) jeans, shirts, cars, planes, army guys
Daughter (7) Coat, Bratz doll, jeans
After reviewing this list of items, it really changed the way Amy and I look at Christmas. We were talking over dinner last night and trying to imagine what it would be like to tell your kids that Santa isn't coming this year.
It was a weepfest as you can imagine. We kept looking at Jack and realizing how lucky the three of us are: we have a warm home (drafty, but warm nonetheless), we have plenty of clothes, we eat well (that goes without saying if you've see me lately), and we have each other.
Oh yeah, and we were in El Toro while this emotion overload came on. Heidi, you would have been so proud!
We quickly decided that whatever money we were putting toward gifts this year would now go to those who desperately need to feel the power of the holiday spirit. We will be going to pick some names off The Giving Tree to take gifts to individuals in nursing homes and the vet's hospital who otherwise will not receive gifts this year. Can you imagine how much Jack will brighten someone's day, bopping in there with a gift for them?
We are also going to make a concerted effort to pinch pennies this month so that we can afford to spend more than usual on Christmas...for others. Which means no more El Toro (if we're even welcome in there anymore)!
And we will probably adopt our own family so we can give to those who actually need it.
Yes, it means I won't be getting that new camera after all and Amy won't be getting her iPod. And my clothes are looking shabby and I'd love to have brand new. But I just can't justify it this year. I have clothes and coats and jeans and food and candy and holiday decor. And, Heaven knows I have a camera!
We've had our perspective on the holidays drastically changed this year, thanks to our new role as parents. It's not about us anymore; it's all about WWJD (that's Jesus; not Jack). And I can tell you one thing: Jesus would feed and clothe the poor. And in honor of his glorious birth, that's what this family will also be doing. We're just a little embarassed that it took us almost 30 years to figure it out!
We encourage your family to do the same, on whatever scale you can afford. Can you imagine if every family donated to one of these causes every year, in lieu of miscellaneous ridiculi?
If you want more information on who to contact to contribute to any of these causes, let me know and I'll give you the contact information--even for your local area.
We'll keep you posted with pictures and stories about our personal Christmas Crusade!
Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Love,
The Bleeding Hearts

Half-y Birthday To Me!

Daddy printed me a sign today. I can't read yet, but I'm pretty sure it's tasty!
Yep, I was right about the yummy part!
I'm eating this half-birthday stuff right up!
I hope your December 8 was as awesome as mine!

Our 200th Post!

Daddy and Jack agreed the other day at Target that the horse was a necessary purchase. Jack absolutely loves it.
Yay! This is post number 200!

All Dressed Up For Daycare

Jack didn't love the hat.
Off with you, hat!
I'm filling out quite nicely, thank you.
Laurie told us to have all the kids dressed in Christmas gear for Thursday.
We don't know what she was up to; she said it was a surprise.

Miscellaneous Jack

Daddy's not the only one who falls asleep when he reads.
Jack was just hanging out in the recliner. (The red mark on his forehead is from falling asleep in the Snugli while Daddy vacuumed. It's not a scar.)
I'm getting bigger every day.

Yummy Carrots

Carrots: They don't look good, but looks can be deceiving!
Jack is ordering up two spoonsful of yummy carrots.
The carrots are good Daddy, but my fingers are scrumptious!
I'm definitely going to need a bath today.
And I'm all done. 1/2 a jar down! My first real food experience is in the books!

Yo Ho Ho

Howdy y'all!
It's been an eventful day here in our lives. I felt great and went to daycare today! I only had one fit today, which Mommy and Daddy said would have been heavenly over the weekend. Laurie was sure pleased. Yay! I am still being a little turd about taking my bottle. It has to be forced, which the 'rents take as a sign they need to step up the cereal feedings. I don't turn that stuff down. No how! And Daddy likes the fact that it doesn't end up in his face and hair twenty minutes later. Yippee!
Mommy, on the other hand, is not doing so whoopie. She had to miss a meeting after school (work) today because she is sicker than a shih tzu (dog, in layman's terms). She came down with a stomach thing at school and had a temperature of 103.1 by the time Daddy and I got home to check on her. Daddy quarantined her to the bedroom and we boys are camping in the living room. Our house smells like generic Lysol spray and plain label chicken noodle soup. Yeah, you would think that'd be a good smell; but together as one? Nay gets my vote.
We are germ infested here at Casa de Vrbi. Between Mommy at school and me at daycare, we don't stand a fighting chance without the aid of hand sanitizer and said stink spray.
My Granny Janny got the onesie in this picture for me in San Diego when she went there for an H&R Block meeting (cult gathering)! I am finally able to fit into it, so I thought we should post a picture of me in it to show off the outfit and my legs--which are getting quite a bit thicker. I'm also lying on the afghan Grandma Elaine crocheted for me. I love it!
And by the way, I don't even try to be cute anymore. I just can't even help it! It comes so natural. The cocked head, the blue eyes, long eyelashes, fuzzy head of hair, chubby cheeks and beautiful smile...it's all just the way I do business!
Speaking of doing business, rolling over is becoming old hat, so I have begun sitting up lately also. I'm in the preliminary stages of that, but it's coming along quite well. What can I say? I'm a quick study once I learn the task at hand.
Oh, and also...Aunt Missy...yeah...Daddy is going to steal your camera. Just thought I'd warn you, since you took this picture and it's flawless. Daddy's camera barely even focuses anymore. He gets mad every time he has to trash an otherwise awesome photo because the auto focus went wonky on him. Santa Claus, I've been such a good boy; won't you get my (shameless) Daddy a camera for Christmas?
And speaking of Christmas, Mommy and Daddy decorated the house for the holidays the other night. Tonight, Daddy was able to use the tacky fiber optic tree to hypnotize me into slumber. How am I writing this if I'm asleep, you ask? I'll never tell!
Welp, gotta run...
Peace out, m' ninjas!
